Choose backup software by restore target

Backup tools copy, synchronize, image, version, or recover data so users can restore files or systems after loss. FreeFileSync, SyncBackFree, Areca Backup, Personal Backup, MiniTool ShadowMaker Free, and recovery tools serve different jobs. Sync is useful, but it is not automatically backup. The safest shortlist starts with what must be restored: one folder, a user profile, a whole disk, a cloud copy, or deleted files after an incident.

Choose backup software by the restore you need

Backup tools should be judged by what they can restore: one file, a folder, a profile, a whole disk, a cloud copy, or deleted data after an incident.

Synchronization is useful, but it is not automatically backup because mistakes can sync too.

Retention, encryption, and restore drills

Backups may contain documents, browser profiles, photos, credentials, finance files, and private messages. Encrypt destinations when backups leave the device.

Run a restore drill before trusting the setup. A backup that cannot be restored is only an optimistic copy.
