Description
BetterWispr is a free, open-source voice dictation app for macOS. You hold a keyboard shortcut, speak, and it types the text into whatever app you are using.
Speech recognition runs on the Mac with Whisper, NVIDIA Parakeet or Apple's on-device speech recognition, so it needs no account and never falls back to a cloud service on its own. If you want an outside speech service, you can connect one with your own API key.
It runs on macOS 14 or later, with separate builds for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, and it is released under the Apache 2.0 licence. Its developer describes it as an open-source alternative to Wispr Flow.
BetterWispr Features
- Hold-to-talk or press-to-toggle, on a shortcut you can change
- A choice of speech models, which download once and then work offline
- Voice commands for punctuation and new lines
- Vocabulary hints and phrase replacements
- A local history of dictations, which can be turned off
- Meeting notes that label your voice and the other side of the call
